Zeolithe Nach dem Unglück in Tschernobyl wurden allein 500.000 t Zeolithe, die zuvor in Lösung versetzt wurden, weiträumig in der Ukraine, in Georgien und Russland verteilt. Der schadhafte Reaktor wurde zusätzlich mit einem Zementgürtel ummantelt, der mit 22.000 t Zeolithen versetzt war.
Auf diese Weise konnten austretende Kontaminanten weitgehend immobil gemacht werden. Mit Hilfe der Filterleistung von Zeolithen war es sogar möglich, trotz einleitender radioaktiver Stoffe, die Trinkwassergewinnung aus dem Dnjepr aufrecht zu halten. Insgesamt konnte durch den schnellen Einsatz von Zeolithen nach dem GAU in Tschernobyl die Belastung mit Caesium-137 um 95% und Strontium-90 um bis zu 60% gegenüber der Ausgangssituation gemindert werden. Den Menschen in den betroffenen Gebieten wurde Zeolithe entweder in Form von Tabletten, Schokolade und Keksen (Zeolith-Gehalt in den Süßwaren: zwei bis 30 %) zur Verfügung gestellt.
